Is it just his eyes or is Anita really getting fat? When did she even start doing this kind of hairstyle on her head right now?
Patrick stopped what he was doing on the dinning table and just stared at his wife who was busy trying to get their two kids ready for school.
Yeah…she was getting really fat.
When did this happen?
He had been with her everyday for the past five years and he hadn’t noticed this drastic changes.
“Honey, hurry up. Remember you promised to drop the kids in school on your way to the office. They are almost ready” she said, looking up from where she was tying their son’s shoe lace.
“I’m almost done” he replied putting his earlier thoughts out of his mind for now.
He got up from the table, stuffed the documents he had been working on into his briefcase and went into the bedroom to get dressed.
He came out five minutes later all dressed up with his car keys.
The kids, Victoria and Michael, were waiting for him.
He was about to leave with the kids when he remembered that Anita had said something about going to the saloon today.
“Honey, are you still going to the saloon today?” He asked. She nodded.
He reached into his pocket and brought out some money, then he gave her double the usual amount he gives her for her hair.
She looked surprised “What am I supposed to do with the remaining money?” She asked
He smiled. “Use everything on the hair. I want you to look really beautiful by the time I come back. Get the best weave you can find. If you need more money, say it let me give you more” he replied.
She gave him a hug “This will do”. He dropped a kiss on her lips and left with the kids.
Anita was surprised…in fact she was confused.
What is going on? Why is Patrick being sweet this morning? What bad thing did he do that he’s indirectly trying to atone for?
She shrugged and went inside to clean up before going to the saloon.
That evening, Patrick came back from the office with a big smile on his face. A smile that froze the moment he saw his wife.
“What happened?” He asked before she even got a chance to welcome him.
“I don’t understand. What are you talking about?” Anita asked with a confused look on her face.
“We agreed you’ll do something nice to your hair? I specifically asked you to. In fact I gave you enough money to do just that but you didn’t. You did the same thing you’ve been doing for ages now. Nothing different about your face. Except you changed the old weave for the same shinier one” He said with a straight face.
“I know. I’m sorry. I didn’t really see any point. It’s not like there’s a special occasion anyway. I stay at home all day. Who’s going to see the expensive hair?” She asked, trying to defend herself.
“Are you saying I’m stupid for asking you to do it? What do you mean by no one will see you? Am I not your husband? Don’t I count? In fact, am I not supposed to be the most important person in your life? The one person you should strive to impress? What then did you do with the money?” He asked trying to control his temper.
“My younger sister called me yesterday. She needed some money for something in school so I sent her part of the money” she said looking everywhere but his face.
Patrick couldn’t believe his ears.
“Why didn’t you tell me about it? Why didn’t you just ask for more money?”
“I didn’t want to bother you.” She looked at him then and continued “What’s the big deal anyway? There’s nothing wrong with this hair I made. It’s comfortable. It’s short and it won’t get in the way of my chores. I’ve been doing something like this for a while now and you’ve never complained. What’s the problem now?” She asked.
He didn’t even know how to even start explaining.
“Anita, when did you start disobeying me? Why didn’t you just do what I asked you to do? So I tell you to do something and you hold a debate with yourself and decide if it’s right or wrong and if you should do it or not?” He asked.
“I thought we were talking about the hair. Where’s all this coming from?” She asked with her hands now firmly on her waist.
“It’s not just about the hair. It’s about everything. The fact that you don’t feel the need to look good anymore for reasons best known to you!” Patrick shot back at her.
“Oh…you’re saying I don’t look good enough for you anymore? You’re saying I look bad now?” She asked.
“Don’t even try to turn this around. You know exactly what I’m talking about. Have you taken a good look at yourself lately? I didn’t marry a fat woman! Back when we were courting, you didn’t joke with your hair. You take care of it. You did the latest trend and style then. What happened to you?”
Anita stood there with her mouth hanging open. She looked hurt.
“Your food is on the table. The kids have gone to bed already. I’m going to bed” she turned and left him standing there. She walked out on him!
Patrick stood there. He didn’t know how the topic had escalated quickly. He didn’t mean to hurt her feelings but he needed her to understand him. Why was she so stubborn?
He dropped his briefcase on the couch and went to the dinning table, as usual, Anita had outdone herself. The food looked delicious but he couldn’t eat just yet. He went on to the bedroom to finish the discussion with Anita. He met her sitting on the edge of the bed, head bowed. He sat beside her, lifted her face to look at his and saw tears rolling down her cheeks.
He felt bad.
“Baby, I’m sorry. That was insensitive of me. I feel stupid for saying all that to you. You’re still my princess.” He said, trying to wipe the tears with the back of his palm
“Insensitive? That was a low blow. That was the worst thing anyone ever said to me. That was an arrow straight to my heart” she said trying to get the words out.
Patrick felt remorseful.
“I know. I’m sorry.”
She turned to him “Tell me the truth Patrick. Is there someone else? Someone you’re admiring? Someone prettier? With prettier hair and a model’s shape?”
Patrick shook his head “No way. No baby. There’s no one. That’s even absurd. Why would I want you to change if I already got someone else?” He asked.
She kept crying. “I didn’t tell you all that for the reason you’re thinking I did. In fact I shouldn’t have said anything. I’m sorry. I was just wondering how and why you changed” he said weakly.
“Oh really? I’ll tell you how it happened. It happened when I gave you 2 children. It happened when you insisted I become a full time housewife. All I do is sit at home, cook for you and the children, clean, play with the kids, eat, sleep. It happened when I had nothing tasking to keep me busy. Remember when I carried your child for 9months? Remember when I did it the second time? That was when it happened!” She said again.
“I’m sorry. I’m not trying to be hard on you. Just forgive me already” Patrick said again. She was quiet for a while. Then she spoke again “I’m not trying to make excuses for being sloppy. I’m not saying I can’t do all these and still be in shape…it’s just that, I don’t know how to explain it”
“Try. Explain it anyhow. I’ll try and understand.” Patrick said gently.
Anita took a deep breath.
“I guess it was when you stopped noticing. You got so used to how I looked and stopped complimenting me. It was like you didn’t even notice. You were always too busy to notice when I’m putting on something new.” She said.
Patrick was surprised. He didn’t remember not noticing.
“I really don’t know what to say.” He said.
“I understand. The kids became your world. Don’t get me wrong, I adore them too but they became more important than me in your life. It was always about them. At some point I felt like just a means to an end. A child bearing machine. I couldn’t complain because I didn’t want to seem like a nag. And in all honesty, you’re the best husband any woman can have…you just don’t pay attention to detail, the little things. Like on your birthday, I got new lingerie for the night. You didn’t even notice, you just said you were too tired to have sex that night. You didn’t even comment on the lingerie. That was the last time I bought fancy lingerie” she added.
She was right. Patrick felt stupid.
“Baby, I am sorry. In fact I owe you. We need a vacation. A weekend away from this place. Call your sister to babysit for the weekend. We’re taking a weekend gateway.” He said while trying to hold her in his arms. Anita snuggled closer to him.
“I love you Anita. You’re the best thing that happened to me. Thank you for the beautiful children and the gift of delicious meals three times every day. Thank you for the clean house and my wardrobe that never runs out of clean clothes. Thank you for the smile you give me each morning as I leave for work and the hug I get when I return. Thank you for the gift of your advices, I don’t know where I’d be without them. Thank you for putting your career on hold for a while to take care of the kids, thank you for being a beautiful woman where it matters more, your heart but most importantly, thank you for loving me…my insensitivity and all” he kissed her deeply while stroking her hair. Anita was still crying
“I love you Patrick, with all my heart and not a day goes by that I don’t thank God for the gift of being your wife and I promise, from now on, I’ll be a changed woman. I’ll use the indoor gym and work my butt off” she said.
“Just don’t become too sexy that I lose you to another man” Patrick said jokingly and they both laughed and kissed and laughed and kissed and laughed and kissed again!
